V for Vendetta … can I get a UK perspective?

Here in the U.S., tomorrow marks the DVD release of the graphic novel turned movie, V for Vendetta. Avid movie goer that I am, I regret having failed to catch V while it was in theaters, so tomorrow will be my first look.
This is what I know … the movie is set in a near-future totalitarian facist London and that our protagonist is carrying out a terrorist plot to bring down the oppressive police state. Interesting.
But at the moment what’s even more interesting is that V carries out his schemes dressed in a Guy Fawkes mask and chanting “Remember, remember the Fifth of November”. So, what I want to know is where you UK Voxers stand on whole Gunpowder Plot.
Where does Guy Fawkes fit into your national conscience? Have you ever participated in burning him in effigy? How did you feel about the Scottish Socialist Party’s Guy Fawkes poster from a couple of years ago?
